In animals rectal temperature is taken for which the clinical thermometer is inserted in the rectum. It should be ensured that the bulb of thermometer should touch the mucous membrane of the rectum. If the rectum is filled with fecal contents, then the contents should be removed before inserting the thermometer because the temperature of the contents (faeces) is less than body temperature. When it is not possible to insert the thermometer in rectum, the vaginal temperature can be taken which is 0.5°F higher than the body temperature. Thermometer should be washed and lubricated with soap water or disinfectant/ antiseptic before putting into the rectum. Before insertion of thermometer in rectum, mercury should be shaken down and the bulb should be properly moistened for proper insertion.
The thermometer should be left for 2 minutes in the contact of rectal mucosa then it is withdrawn and the temperature is read. After taking the temperature thermometer is washed and dipped in disinfectant and cleaned with a piece of gauge or towel. If there is doubt, repeat the process to record temperature properly. The temperature should be recorded daily in morning and evening and it should be plotted on graph paper to make a curve. Table 4.1 gives normal body temperature of animals.
