Abstract

Homeopathy is a complementary form of medicine in which illness is treated by giving small amounts of natural substances. It is widely used in livestock, especially in order to minimise the use of antibiotics, although there is often controversial within the scientific community and veterinary practice about the use of homeopathic remedies in food-producing animals. So main aim of this study is to aware the people about homeopathy and to show how the remedies are equally beneficial for veterinary health problems.

Keywords: Homeopathy, diseases, veterinary practice, cattle, buffalo.

Background

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine discovered and developed in  the late 1700’s and early 1800’s by a German physician named of  Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. John Martin Honigberger was the first person who is recognised to prefer homeopathy for treating his favourite horse of its bad leg ulcers. In the year 1986, the International Association for Veterinary Homeopathy (IAVH) was formed  in Luxembourg.  Department of AYUSH, Government of India and Veterinary Council of India has shown interest for development of Homeopathy [1]. Mr Haycock, a honored veterinary surgeon who is well knowledged with the old and new systems of medicines, says of Homeopathy “it cures disease more quickly; it does so without leaving any injurious effect upon the constitutional powers; it saves more animals and costs less” [2]. According to the European Commission Regulation (EC No 889/2008, Article 24[2]) (European Commission 2008) on organic agriculture, homeopathic and other products should be used in preference to chemically synthesised allopathic veterinary treatment, provide effective result for the species of animals and the conditions for which the treatment is performed. Many researches have been started in the field of veterinary with homeopathic interventions. By the end of 2013, the total number of peer-reviewed RCTs had risen to 44. Nineteen RCTs were placebo controlled and rest  25 were controlled by another comparator [3].

Introduction

Homeopathy is a complementary and alternative system of medicine based on philosophy of holism which play a promising role in Veterinary medicine as the same way like human beings do. There are many similarities between animal and human health problems besides some important differences but it is not a problem for homeopathic medicine prescriber, as the choice of remedy is based upon presented symptoms [3].  The major principle of Homeopathy is Like Treats Like, means to treat a sick individual with particular symptoms, by using a  remedy that produces similar symptoms in a healthy individual. Homeopathy  stimulate the body to induce the natural healing process. Homeopathic remedies are derived from  mineral, plant and animal substances and their high dilution alters them absolutely non-toxic. When a remedy reaches a certain dilution, the  healing power of these remedies is then purely  energetic. Although many evidence supports the widely use of  homeopathic medicines in commonly seen diseases as well as for particular diseases which are specific to animals
(4,5, 6, 7), within the scientific community there is some controversial about the use of these remedies in livestock.

Advantages of Homeopathy medicine

  • Inexpensive
  • No side effects
  • No need of diagnosis only dependant on symptom observation.
  • To provide the medicine to animals no need for laboratory trials.
  • Dependence on patient’s individuality.
  • work with the body’s own disease-combating mechanisms to effect a cure and this constitutes a most natural, humane and effective method of cure.
  • No environmental pollution.

Mode of administration

Homeopathy medicines are available in globules form or in liquid form. Give 4-5 globules of 40 no. Size or 2-4 drops in 3-5 ml of water. The medicated water directly applied on tongue, nostrils or on mucous membrane of vagina by using syringe or sprayer. Incase of biochemic remedy  8-10 tablets dissolve in 5-10 ml of lukewarm or fresh water and put the medicated water directly in mouth by using syringe. Also available in powder, syrup, ointment and cream form.
