Pulse Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) or Magnetic Therapy in Veterinary Field
What is Magnetic Therapy?
Magnetic therapy is a long-used but little-understood use of magnetic fields for treatment of various medical conditions. It has been used in human medicine for a long time and has recently become more popular in treating animals.
Magnetic therapies are created through pulsed electromagnetic fields or permanent magnets. These magnets come in many sizes and strengths based on the size of the dog, the condition being treated, and the length of the treatment. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy relies on different electromagnetic pulses directed to the problem area in a series of treatments to influence cell behavior with electrical changes around and within the cells.
Magnetic therapies heal the body by restoring effective circulation and eliminating inflammation. Increased blood flow to a diseased part of the body encourages an increase in nutrients to that location, speeding up the healing process. While magnetic therapies cannot cure all medical problems, they are an inexpensive, non-invasive, and safe option to use in healing.
Magnetic therapy, more accurately termed magnetic field therapy, is the use of magnetic fields, generated by either permanent magnets or pulsed electromagnetic fields, for treatment of medical conditions. Magnets used for treatment purposes come in many different sizes and strengths, and duration of treatment varies with the type of magnet and condition being treated. Permanent magnets come in strips, bars, and beads, and are often taped or glued to specific areas of the body for prolonged periods of time. With pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, defined pulses of electromagnetic energy are delivered to the affected area in a series of treatments that each last up to an hour.
What is Pulse Magnetic Therapy for Dogs
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy targets tissues through the use of electromagnetic waves at low frequencies, resulting in healing and pain relief. This is different from electric stimulation (also known as E-stim or TENS), as E-stimulation is dependent on a current that is delivered to the tissue to create local pain relief. PEMF provides relief through the detection of the low electromagnetic frequency energy made by sick and injured cells. When the emitted electromagnetic wave is sensed by local tissue, cellular changes take place that lead to an increase in energy production, which in turn creates vasodilation and increases blood flow to the target area. This increased circulation delivers anti-inflammatory cells to the area, which aids in decreasing pain, helps with healing, and decreases swelling. In addition, beta endorphins, which are our body’s own pain-relieving chemicals, are emitted through the cellular changes in response to PEMF treatment.
Magnetic medical aid is the use of magnetic fields for the treatment of varied medical conditions. utilised in human medicine for a long time, it’s recently also become additional popular in treating animals
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PMFT) is a form of electrotherapy that uses pulsed electromagnetic fields at differing frequencies, this is because the cells in our body all have totally different electrical charges that change when cells are damaged. PMFT induces secondary electrical fields within the cells within the body so as to return the damaged cells to their ‘healthy’ electrical charge. This ends up in a cascade of normal cellular reactions inside the cells leading to an improved rate of healing of bone, nerves, and soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, muscles, skin), additionally as providing pain relief.
PEMF uses pulsing electromagnetic fields to jump-start and accelerates normal biological cellular reactions. a small battery current is pulsed through a coil to create the electromagnetic field and initiate the biological cellular reactions. Cells contain electrically charged particles referred to as ions that govern all cellular processes. when the body is stressed (by sickness, competition, environmental factors or age) the cellular membrane that conducts the essential ions into and out of the cell becomes compromised and is unable to efficiently do its job of managing the transport of those ions. The PEMF generates a magnetic field that makes motion straightaway and positively directly impacts these ions and membrane potential to stimulate them into action. The result is a rise in cellular communication and circulation, a decrease in inflammation and pain and resulting acceleration of healing. There aren’t any side effects seen with the use of PEMF.
Magnetic therapies heal the dog’s body by restoring effective circulation and eliminating inflammation. increased blood flow to a diseased part of the dog’s body encourages a rise in nutrients to that location, speeding up the healing process. while magnetic therapies cannot cure all medical problems, they’re an affordable, non-invasive, and safe choice to use in healing. Magnetic field therapy is a non-invasive treatment that may act as a form of pain relief in chronic degenerative conditions and speed recovery time from acute traumatic injuries. The use of magnets for medical treatment dates back as far as 2000BC in China. With pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, defined pulses of electromagnetic energy are delivered to the affected area in a series of treatments.
PEMF has been used in the treatment of back and leg injuries in horses for several decades. With advancements in technology and PEMF equipment, the use of magnetic therapy has been applied to canines ailed by sprains, ligament injuries, and fractures.
The body’s natural magnetic field is created by the flow of electrically charges ions in and out of cell and the transmission of electric impulses through cell membranes. Only PEMF (not static magnets) can influence electrical changes on a cellular level. PEMF delivers a short duration, high intensity magnetic pulse which allows penetration through the joints and muscles in 20 minutes or less.

What is the history of magnetic therapy in veterinary medicine?
The use of magnets as a medical treatment was documented in China in 2000BC, and references to its use can be found in the early cultures of India, Egypt and Greece. Magnetic medicine continued to be explored through the ages, and the recognition of the presence of ions in cellular tissues and fluids provided a possible scientific explanation for the action of magnetic fields on living organisms. Magnetic therapy fell out of favor in the early twentieth century, as medical research became focused on drug-based therapies and biochemistry.
In recent decades, permanent magnets have begun to be used widely in Japan, while in Germany low frequency PEMF therapy has become a popular form of treatment in both humans and animals. With technologic advances, equipment is becoming smaller, lighter, and less costly, making its application to a wider range of species more practical.
Magnetic field therapy has been used for clinical treatment of horses for several decades. Since the size of the patient determines the size of the magnetic field needed for tissue penetration, the original PEMF equipment was inappropriate for use in small animals. Improvements in technology have resulted in a relatively recent expansion into small animal and ruminant practice.
Magnetic Therapy Procedure in Dogs
There are two primary modes of magnetic therapy: use of magnets themselves, and the use of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF).Permanent or static magnets come in many sizes and are available in the shapes of bars, beads, and strips. These magnets are affixed with glue or tape to the affected area for a specific amount of time. Permanent magnets are often implemented in popular canine supplies like dog collars, jackets, mats, and beds.
PEMF therapy uses a pulsing current that flows through a coiled wire to create a magnetic field. It is imperative that PEMF therapy is administered daily in consecutive sessions. Many veterinarians will place the dog in a pulsed signal therapy device where the pulse signal is emitted. It is a safe, painless process that, over time, may improve your dog’s health.
Efficacy of Magnetic Therapy in Dogs
The effectiveness of magnetic therapy is hard to gauge. Some veterinarians and canine owners have seen positive results from this therapy, but no literature or double blind studies offer substantial evidence that magnetic therapy works. This uncertainty is, in part, because the impact that magnetic therapy has on the body is still not entirely understood. Magnets cause an increase in blood flow, which is one possible explanation for why it may help alleviate some painful medical conditions. Until scientific studies can show a physiological effect, magnetic therapies will have their fair share of skeptics.
Magnetic Therapy Recovery in Dogs
There is little to no recovery time associated with magnetic therapy. For some canines, the application of permanent magnets results in an almost immediate difference in pain loss and ease of movement. PEMF has no side effects and will not interfere with any implants or medications. Some chronic conditions will require several rounds of PEMF, and results may not be evident for a week or two after treatment begins.
