SIGNIFICANCE OF DONKEY MILK FOR HUMANKIND

SUCCESS STORY OF GOVT. PROJECT UNDER KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, EAST SINGHBHUM

The success of the NICRA project handled by me can be well assured by the fact that the base line survey made during the initiation of the project at adopted villages reveals in an increase of total cultivable land from 356 ha to 465 ha (30% increased). Area under improved variety of paddy increased from 109 to 380 ha (248% increased). Cropping intensity of the NICRA villages increased by 30% (114 to 144%).The farmers who were earlier reluctant to adopt new ideas or climate resilient technologies, are now taking interest in innovative ideas and application of new technology. The process of implementation is already underway. There has been substantial increase in irrigated area from 37ha to 142ha  (283% increased). Which is very fruitful. Earlier almost all  areas where mono cropped with paddy but after implementation of the project, now the double cropping  areas also developed in some patches where natural resources such as check dams, ponds, wells renovated/desilted and 5% model structures in a series that cover up, medium and low land to raised water tables and moisten their surroundings. Even short duration varieties and drought tolerant varieties of paddy and pigeon pea shown an increase in yield by 45 and 56 % as compared to their local varieties. Crop productivity has been Increased (36%) by use of balance fertilizer dose. Again the introduction of Intercropping with Pigeon pea + Maize, Pigeon pea + mung and Pigeon pea +Urd has successfully taking care of the climate change situation. This will also add to the increase in production. Similarly Daincha is now being used in the form of Green// Brown manure and also started vermin compost which is highly effective in climate change scenario along with increase in fertility of lands. They are happily accepted these technologies when they were explained the benefit of the same. Replacement of local breed with Jharsukh, Jharshim which is stress tolerant and are well adopted in semi incentive housing structure. Likewise, Integrated farming system models and Khaki Campbell breeds are also promoted there for socio –economic development of NICRA village farmers.

Another project handed by me was CCKN-IA with the help of this project farmers are now becoming aware of the weather and agriculture related information from time to time. Earlier this type of transfer of knowledge sharing was not available  to the farmers ,now the system of black board ,bulletins, one pager content are very much farmers friendly. They have realized the benefits successfully implementing the information given to them. They have understand the importance of organic applications and ill effects of imbalanced use of chemicals in agriculture.  The farmers /krishak Mitra’s through NICE website which was developed for easy access of information and technologies, this also brought their interest and aware them to understand resilient technologies in climate change scenario. In this respect the demonstration on Integrated crop and pest management in Tomato (Var: Amrita) was conducted. In this demonstration farmer reported that majority of insect-pest infestation was on marigold, that was grown as inter crop & use of pheromone traps was helpful for 90% reduction of pest attack in their main crop Tomato. Reduction in cost of cultivation by 20% as application of insect-pest & chemical fertilizer is reduced. Overall 20% increase in production was observed. Use of vermin compost after charging it with Tricoderma viridi, control wilting in Tomato completely. Farmers also received additional income by selling flowers. The intervention was found effective and climate resilient.

With the help of DRMR-TSP on Mustard, the area and production of mustard was considerably increased by 25% and 57% respectively in the scheduled tribe populated areas of East Singhbhum district. In addition to demonstration , the training, krishak ghosthi, organization of field day and interaction with farmers continuously for 3 years have made substantial increase in the production of mustard from approximately 5-11 quintals per ha. The recommended dose of fertilizes partially used by the adopted village farmers have helped the above increased. Dissemination of technology from farmer to farmers is now in practice. This demonstration really benefited farmers besides their domestic requirement of oil, they are selling rest over seeds to others and store some seeds for future crop. In addition, oil cakes are byproduct and the stems of mustard are used as fuel.

Seed hub project started in Nov. 2016 in KVK, East Singhbhum. As a I/c Seed hub, during 2017-18 total of 455.5 q seeds of different pulses such as Pigeon Pea, Urd, Kulthi, Lentil, Chickpea and moong has been produced in KVK farm as well as in the some progressive farmers field. The total of 4.97 lakh has been generated by selling of above mentioned pulse seeds to different organisation.

  • Farmers of a district were trained for commercial vegetable production and at present more than 150 farmers are commercially cultivating vegetables. they have received training on Hitech horticulture (23 no), fertilizer management in vegetables crops (20 no), improved cultivation practices for vegetable production (80 no) and in post harvest management (27 no), like shorting, grading, packing etc. they have also develop marketing link with West Bangol, Odisha, Bihar & Chhatishgarh state.
  • Thirty seven no of training on mushroom cultivation has been given to rural youth and self help group (Approx 450 participants) within district. At present 12 no of self help group and 30 rural youth has been adopted mushroom cultivation as their profession and self employed.
  • Promotion of crop/ horticulture + fish cum duck and crop/ horticulture + fish cum pig farming system within district was done by KVK through various training programme (141 no), demonstration (20 no) and ATMA sponsored OFT (1 no). At present 20 farm families have been adopted the above said farming system model.
  • As the soil of East Singhbhum district is acidic in reaction & its pH varies from 4.1 to 7.3. Cauliflower crops clearly shows “B” deficiency symptoms in the soil were intensive cultivation of vegetables are in practice. To control brown rot in cauliflower which occur due to boron deficiency in soil 215 no of training programme were organized at KVK, 2 no of on farm trial were conducted 2006-07 & 2008-09, 56 farmers were benefited through FLD programme and total of 9 ha area were covered under FLD programme. Through field day 100 farmers were aware to control this brown rot by spraying borax @ 2g/ ltr. of water and this technology was also recommended to ATMA for its broader dissemination. At present approximate 70% farmers of the district are adopting this technology.

Besides these works , mandatory activities Skilled training programmes(by ASCI ) and also convergence with line departments are a part of regular activity for broader dissemination of technologies and betterment of farming community of our district. Effort has also be taken to rejuvenate Lac cultivation in our district through demonstration and at present more than 30farm families are adopting improved technology of lac production & successfully growing Rangini & Kusumi lac in our district. I have also given emphasis an crop diversification in our district & the result of which approximately 15ha area has been comes under Banana cultivation & more than 25 farm families are adopting marigold cultivations. With this effort and dedications I have been able to say that the present scenario is quite different from what it was few years earlier.
