Despite the country’s dominance in global milk production, the average milk yield per animal remains considerably low compared to international standards. This disparity can be attributed to several factors, including poor genetic potential of the dairy breeds, inadequate nutrition, and limited access to veterinary services. The Indian dairy industry is predominantly characterized by smallholder farms, which contribute to over 70% of the total milk production. These small-scale operations often lack the resources and knowledge required to implement advanced farming practices that could enhance productivity.

To sustain and enhance its global position, India needs to adopt transformative strategies aimed at boosting the productivity of dairy animals. This article reviews the current state of dairy farming in India and outlines comprehensive strategies to achieve significant productivity gains. By addressing the underlying issues and leveraging modern agricultural techniques, India can ensure sustainable growth and remain competitive in the global dairy market.

Strategies for Enhancing Animal Productivity

Genetic Improvement Programs
