Veterinary Assistant surgeon

ABSTRACT:-

A full term pregnant cross breed cow, age of 8yrs, 5th parity said to have in appetence on physical examination, the cow was dull and depressed, temperature 39.30c . The cow had mucopurulent vaginal discharge with mild straining. Per rectal examination revealed that there was doughy consistency of uterus with fetal parts without fetal fluids and fremitus was feable. Per vaginal assessment revealed that two finger dilatation of cervix with mucopurulent discharge. Parturition of cow was induced by Injection Dexamethasone 20mg and Injection cloprostenal 500mcg. After 48 hours the cow showed severe straining with completely relaxed cervix. Anteriorly presented fetus in dorso sacral position with forelimb flexon could be ascertained. After correcting the posture, relieved dead fetus through vagina. The dead fetus had complete agenesis of lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae and abdominal region was just present as a floppy sac covered by skin. (Perosomus elumbis). The cow was treated by injection ceftiofur sodium 2mg per kg body weight, injection flunixin meglumine 1mg, kg body weight and injection chlorpheniramine maleate 10ml for 5 days. The recovery of cow was uneventful.
KEY WORDS:-
Perosomus elumbis, cow.

INTRODUCTION:-

Persomus elumbis is an occassionly occurred congenital anomaly in cattle. The possible genetic etiology of perosomus elumbis in cattle remain unreported (Agerholm et al 2014). It is characterized by partial or complete agenesis of lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae and ankylosis of hind limbs (son, 2008). The primary abnormality is a hypoplasia or aplasia of spinal cord of fetus which ends in thoracic region. The region of the body including hind limbs which was normally supplied lumbar and sacral nerves exhibit mucular atrophy and joint movement does not develop. The present field report deals with congenital defect of perosomus elumbis in a calf which was relieved through per vagum

CASE HISTROY AND OBSERVATION:-

A full term pregnant cross breed cow, age of 8yrs, 5th parity said to have inappetence. On physical examination revealed that cow was dull and depressed, temperature 39.30c, The cow had mucopurulent vaginal discharge with mild straining. Per rectal examination revealed that there was doughy consistency of uterus with fetal parts without fetal fluids and fremitus was feable. Per vaginal assessment revealed that there was two finger dilatation of cervix with mucopurulent discharge.

TREATMENT:-

Parturition of cow was induced by injection Dexamethasone Sodium 20mg ( Dexona Zydus) intra muscular and injection cloprostenol 500mcg ( Pragma Intas) intramuscular. After 48 hours the cow showed severe straining with completely, relaxed cervix. Anteriorly presented fetus in dorso sacral position with forelimb flexion could be ascertained. After correction of posture, the dead fetus relieved through vagina. The dead fetus had complete agenesis of lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae and abdominal region was just present as a floppy sac covered by a skin (Perosomus elumbis). The cow was treated by injection ceftiofur sodium (Xyrofur Intas) 2mg per kg body weight intramuscular, injection flunixin meglumine (Finodyne MSD) 1mg kg body weight intramuscular and injection chlorpheniramine maleate (Chloril TTK) 10ml intramuscular for 5 days. The recovery of cow was uneventful.

DISCUSSION:-

For this abnormalities of perosomus elumbis condition of calf have different view about the etiology. Estimating the time of cessation of normal development of calf may give important clues to whether the anomaly has a genetic or environmental basis (Rousseaux CB, Ribble CS, 1988). In the United States research in Kansas on congenital defects in beef cattle has been supported by federal Agricultural Research service (Leipold HW, Dennis SM, Hiraga, Woolen, Steffen, 1991). This calf’s malformation occurred during embryogenesis may have been caused by a chromosomal mutation in the homeobox gene family (Jones CJ 1999). But still the possible genetic etiology of perosomus elumbis in cattle remain unreported (Agerholm et al 2014).
