Ban of Nimesulide and its formulations for Animals use in India
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has officially banned the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of Nimesulide and its formulations for animals with immediate effect.
This decision addresses rising concerns about the drug’s harmful effects on animals and its detrimental impact on India’s vulture population. The move follows a directive from the Delhi High Court, which questioned the delay in imposing the ban.

Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties in human medicine. In India, its use in veterinary practices has raised significant environmental concerns, leading to regulatory actions.
Reason for the Ban-
The primary reason for banning Nimesulide and its formulations for animal use is its detrimental impact on vulture populations. When livestock treated with Nimesulide die, their carcasses may contain residues of the drug. Vultures feeding on these contaminated carcasses can suffer from acute kidney failure, leading to their death.
Studies have shown that NSAIDs like diclofenac, previously used in veterinary medicine, were responsible for catastrophic declines in vulture populations across the Indian subcontinent. Recognizing this, diclofenac was banned for veterinary use in India in 2006. Similar toxic effects have been observed with other NSAIDs, including Nimesulide, prompting concerns about their usage in animals.

In response to these environmental threats, the Government of India has taken steps to ban the manufacture, sale, and distribution of Nimesulide and its formulations for animal use under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
