CHRONIC (NODULAR) ENTERITIS AND SUPPURATIVE PERICARDITIS IN A GOAT – A RARE CASE

  • ABSTRACT
  • A carcass of two months old male goat was presented to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary college, Bidar, Karnataka with a history of poor appetite and sudden death. Ticks were present over the body. Rigor mortis was present in the hind limbs. Visible mucous membranes were pale. On opening, the mesentery was severely congested. Abomasal mucosa was severely congested and folds were slightly congested and oedematous.
  • Liver was slightly enlarged with patchy haemorrhagic areas on the surface and with slight cirrhosis (Fig. 1).

  • Gall bladder was distended. Spleen was slightly thickened and fibrotic.
  • Both the kidneys were congested and there were severe haemorrhages on the cortico-medullary junction (Fig.2).
  • Small intestinal mucosa showed numerous small multiple nodules and catarrhal to haemorrhagic enteritis (Fig.3).

  • Heart was congested and lumen showed currant jelly clot and supportive pericarditis.
  • Both the lungs showed suppuration with mild fibrotic changes and on cut section showed haemorrhages, fibrinous material and consolidated areas (Fig.4).
  • Severe adhesions of heart and lung with rib cage and thorasic cavity (Fig. 5).

  • Trachea was slightly congested. Finally, the death of the animal was due to cirrhosis or nodular enteritis and suppurative pericarditis.
