Commerce Ministry Notifies Guidelines for Certification of Halal Meat Products
Meat and its products will be allowed to be exported as ‘halal certified’ only if they are produced, processed and packaged in a facility having a valid certificate issued by a body accredited by a board of the Quality Council of India, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. However, it said that the procedure for export of non-halal certified meat and meat products will remain unchanged.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on January 17, 2023, proposed following draft guidelines on Halal certification for the export of meat and its products.
- All meat and meat products to be exported as “Halal certified” only if it is produced, processed, and packed under a valid certificate issued by a Certification Body duly accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB), Quality Council of India (QCI) under India Conformity Assessment Scheme (i-CAS) -Halal as per enclosed guidelines.
- The Certification Bodies shall follow the procedure laid down as per the i-CAS – Halal.
- The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) shall be designated as the overall monitoring agency for this purpose.
