Dr. K.S. Rao, often hailed as the “Guru of Indian Toxicology,” has dedicated over five decades to the field of toxicology, significantly influencing both national and international scientific communities. His extensive expertise encompasses the safety evaluation of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, food additives, nutraceuticals, vaccines, medical devices, and cosmetic ingredients. Currently, he serves as the Subject Matter Expert in Safety Assessment at Eurofins Advinus Limited in Bangalore.
Dr. Rao’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & A.H.), followed by a Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) and a Ph.D. in toxicology. In 1976, he commenced his professional career at G.D. Searle, where he was among a select group responsible for drafting Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines, which were subsequently adopted by the FDA and became global standards.
Dr. K.S. Rao (M.V.Sc., Ph. D, DABT), is a Board-Certified Toxicologist with more than 40 + years of global experience in safety evaluation. Started his career in 1971 at G.D. Searle and later moved to Dow Chemical and Quintiles, USA. After returning to India, he was heading M/s Jai Research Foundation, Gujarat and Head of Toxicology at, M/s Advinus Therapeutics and M/s Syngene International, Bangalore. He is an international expert in the toxicological assessment of Agrochemicals, Industrial Chemicals (REACH), Drug Development (small and large molecules) from Discovery Toxicology to IND and NDA filing, Food Additives, Nutraceuticals, Vaccines, Medical Devices and Cosmetic Ingredients.
Dr. Rao has been providing guidance on product development to hundreds of companies across the world with major emphasis on testing schemes/strategies and Risk Assessment. He is an Emeritus Member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) in USA. The first Indian Toxicologist, appointed for this status for being a member of the SOT for 40 years. Dr. Rao is the recipient of the Life Time Achievement award from the Society of Toxicology of India (STOX) for his outstanding contributions in Toxicology. He is instrumental in getting the Diplomate of American Board of Toxicology (DABT) examination to India since 2009. In the last 8 years, 90 candidates have passed the DABT examination from India. Dr. Rao has published and presented papers in international journals and conferences. He is the principal author of more than 500 safety evaluation study reports of various new compounds marketed or to be marketed. These reports are submitted to regulatory authorities of several countries including FDA & EPA (U.S.A), EMA, Japanese Health and Indian Regulatory Authorities. Dr. Rao is the recipient of the Toxicologist Mentor Award from the Society of Toxicology (SOT). Dr. Rao is the First Indian origin to receive such an award in the 60-years history of the existence of the SOT.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Rao has held pivotal roles in renowned organizations, including Dow Chemical Company, Jai Research Foundation, Quintiles, and Advinus Therapeutics. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing toxicological research and safety assessments across various sectors. Notably, he has authored over 500 safety evaluation study reports for new compounds, many of which have been submitted to regulatory authorities such as the U.S. FDA, EPA, EMA, and health agencies in Japan and India.
A significant aspect of Dr. Rao’s legacy is his commitment to mentoring the next generation of toxicologists. Recognizing the need for advanced certification in India, he was instrumental in bringing the Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT) examination to the country in 2009. Prior to his efforts, there were no board-certified toxicologists in India due to logistical and financial constraints. His initiative has since enabled numerous Indian professionals to achieve this esteemed certification.
In recognition of his unwavering dedication to education and mentorship, Dr. Rao received the 2021 Society of Toxicology (SOT) Toxicologist Mentoring Award, becoming the first individual of Indian origin to be honored in this manner in the organization’s 60-year history. Additionally, he holds the distinction of being the first Indian toxicologist appointed as an Emeritus member of the SOT, acknowledging his over 40-year association with the society.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Rao founded the ToxGurukul Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at providing a platform for professionals in toxicology to share knowledge and address challenges in the field. The foundation focuses on educating upcoming toxicologists in India, preparing them to excel in academic, governmental, and industrial roles, and ensuring they meet global standards.
Dr. Rao’s contributions have been further acknowledged through various accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Toxicology of India (STOX) for his outstanding work in the field.
