So our another wonderful Woman Wildlife Vet is Dr Komal Raul ( Powar),Veterinary Officer at Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo, Mumbai.
Since childhood she was fond of cats but was completely unaware of the Veterinary profession till she completed her 12th std studies. She was inspired by her mentor Dr Makrand Chavan a leading practitioner in Mumbai and she left Physiotherapy seat in Nair Hospital( one of the top most hospital in Mumbai) to peruse her career in Veterinary sciences. She completed her Masters in Surgery from Bombay Veterinary college with special interest in veterinary ophthalmology. While she was perusing her masters degree she had secured a job in Municipal corporation of Greater Mumbai as Veterinary Officer and was posted in Deonar Abattoir and worked there for 2 years. Never had she dreamt that she would be working with wild animals. But destiny had different plans for her and she got posted the post in Mumbai Zoo in 2010. The Zoo was under the scanner by many NGOs as it was neglected and vets preferred not to be posted for duty. However she took her posting as an opportunity to learn about wild animals – a field completely new and challenging as compared to dogs and cats.
In these past 10 years a lot has changed and the Zoo has seen a 360 degree change.Besides working in the Zoo as a vet she is still pursuing her first love that of Veterinary ophthalmology and have treated and operated a number of eye ailment cases in small animals for the past 12 years.
