IT’S A NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASE i.e, LYSSA VIRUS(Greek spirit of madness)OF RHABDOVIRIDAE FAMILY CAUSING ACUTE ENCEPHALITIS.THE INCUBATION PERIOD 2-8weeks GENERALLY BUT IN RARE CASES IT VARIES 10days-2Yrs.
VIRUS PRESENT IN SALIVA OF DOGS RESPONSIBLE FOR 99% OF HUMAN RABIES CASES HOWEVER BATS ARE THOUGHT TO BE ORIGINAL ANIMAL RESERVOIR BUT TRANSMISSION IS RARE.
•ZERO BY 2030
THE GLOBAL STRATEGIC PLAN IN 2015 THE WORLD CALLED FOR ACTION BY SETTING “ZERO HUMAN DOG-MEDIATED RABIES DEATH BY 2030” THROUGH “ONE HEALTH COLLABOTION” b/w HUMAN & VETERINARY HEALTH SECTORS BY FOUR ORGANIZATIONS WHO,FAO,OIE,GARC AROUND WORLDWIDE.
WHY TO ELIMINATE
AN ESTIMATED 59000 PEOPLE DIE FROM RABIES/YEAR i.e, 1PERSON EVERY 9MINUTES OF EVERY DAY.NOW 80% CASES IN RURAL AREAS & 40% OF DEATHS IN CHILDREN AGED UNDER 15Yrs(4 OUTOF 10 DEATHS).
3 PHASE APPROACH
PHASE 1(START UP 2018-2020):-SUPPORTING COUNTRIES TO PREPARE BUDGET, EFFECTIVE, SUSTAINABLE ELIMINATION PLANS.
PHASE 2(SCALE UP 2021-2025):-USING FOUNDATION, IMPROVED WITH LEARNING AND EXPERIENCE.
PHASE 3(MOP UP 2026-2030):-ITS LAST MILE TO SUPPORT COUNTRY EFFORTS TO REACH ZERO BY 2030.
•PREVENTION
THROUGH 3 PROVEN EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS
1.AWARNESS(empowers people to save themselves through campaigns).
2.POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS(series of RABIES IMMUNOGLOBULIN vaccines).
3.MASS DOG VACCINATION(sustained vaccination coverage of 70% can stop transmission at its source).
•CONTROL
•BY BLOCKING OF TRANSMISSION CHANNEL, IMMEDIATE LOCAL TREATMENT TO BITTEN PEOPLE. •IMPROVING RABIES DIAGNOSIS & SURVEILLANCE,IMMUNIZATION,ISOLATION,QUARANTINE OF ANIMALS.

CONTROL OF STRAY DOGS,BIOLOGICAL BANKS,IBCM(INTEGRATED BITE CASE MANAGEMENT).
•EVERY YEAR TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT RABIES ON WORLD RABIES DAY 28thSEPTEMBER TO ENHANCE PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE.
•GOAL “TO ENSURE HEALTHY LIVES & PROMOTE WELL-BEING FOR ALL AT ALL STAGES”.
