The #EUAsiaAMR2021 Online Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) on animal health and the environment starts today. “AMR is a silent but relentlessly developing global pandemic that requires all our attention. In this regard, EU cooperation with the nine Asian countries involved in this series of conferences will be essential to make progress in that domain.” said Koen Van Dyck, Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), European Commission at the opening session today.

The EU has not been passive in the face of this growing threat: fighting against AMR remains a clear priority as it is clear that global cooperation in partnership with non-EU countries will be essential to keeping AMR in check.

There is an urgent need to tackle AMR now, before it becomes too late. The EU and Asian countries intend to engage in a very dynamic cooperation aiming to establish strategic priorities and common actions to combating AMR.

Awareness is a very significant issue that we need to deal with promptly when combating AMR, if we’re going to have any changes in regulations or policy that need to start at a very high level following the “One Health” perspective.

We need to make sure that we can get policy coming from the top level and feed awareness among those who are actually dispensing or using antimicrobials. Top and bottom need to be working together and making sure that we have buy-in and that people understand the importance of addressing AMR.
