Modern and mechanized dairy farms are need of the time – Dr. Inderjeet Singh

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana is constantly working for the betterment of livestock professions and animal welfare. For this purpose, the University continues to innovate its research, technology and facilities while also keeping in view the needs of the field. In this connection a delegation of experts from the University led by Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor visited Frontier Dairy Junction, a modern and mechanized dairy farm at Halwara.

The partners of this dairy unit Sh. Narinder Singh and Sh. Jagdish Rai Dhanda informed that the dairy farm, spread over an area of ​​more than 12 acres, has about 700 crossbred animals. The farm has high roof sheds, large fans, fogger and open air flow. Sh. Singh said that electronic tags have been installed to keep a computer record of each animal. Green fodder is sown in 350 acres for the animals and fodder is given to the animals only after making silage. A mill has been set up to provide balanced feed to the animals.

Organic manure ‘Slurry’ is also made by collecting cow dung, urine and residues. Rainwater harvesting system has also been set up to conserve farm water and rain water. A meticulous and neat shed has been constructed for the newborns where the need for food, water and rest has been taken care of.

After machine milking of animals, milk is pasteurized and mechanically packed. Apart from milk, cheese and ghee are also prepared.

A healthy and informative discussion was also held during the visit. Sh. Singh described some of their issues at dairy farm like reproduction disorders, more difference in calving period, formation of good quality feed, value added products, cost cutting and effective marketing.

Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor assured him that the experts of the University would come here and solve their problems. He said that we will send our students also to understand the needs of same type of dairy farmers and will replicate good practices to other farms also.
