Abstract

Cattle identification and tracking are vital for disease control, vaccination management, food-shortage alleviation, and ownership management. Traditional methods like ear tagging, branding, and tattooing are vulnerable. RFID systems offer operational improvements. Biometric traits, such as muzzle print images, iris patterns, and retinal vascular patterns, have emerged as a promising trend due to their uniqueness, immutability, and low costs. However, challenges remain in capturing, accuracy, processing time, and system operability.

Introduction

Biometrics technology assigns unique identity based on physiological or behavioural features, with muzzle print or nose print being studied since 1921 for animal identification. Nose printing in cattle involves unique patterns on the nose surface, similar to fingerprinting in humans. These patterns serve as identification and are used in cattle management and tracking systems.

How nose printing is done?

Nose printing typically involves capturing an image or a scan of the cow’s nose, focusing on the unique patterns, and then using this information to create a digital or physical record for identification purposes. This technology is particularly useful for large-scale cattle operations, as it allows for efficient and accurate tracking of individual animals without the need for more invasive methods like branding or ear tagging.
