ONE HEALTH AMR ONLINE WORKSHOP IN CHINA

Promoting Best Practices to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Asia

from a One Health Perspective: Research and Innovation

-Beijing, China, 24-25 May 2022, PASHUDHAN PRAHAREE

Beijing, China – 18 May 2022 – The One Health antimicrobial resistance workshop with a focus on research and innovation will take place via videoconference on 24-25 May 2022. Key experts, researchers, doctors as well as stakeholders from the public and private sectors, from the European Union, China and other countries in Asia, will participate in focused discussions around AMR issues.

It is argued that AMR could kill 10 million people per year by 2050. If unaddressed, AMR may contribute to extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition.[1] In the high impact scenario, AMR-led infections would result into a fall of global GDP by 3.8% before 2050. The disease burden will be associated with an estimated economic cost of up to 95 trillion EUR if no action is taken to effectively prevent the continued emergence of AMR.  Therefore, AMR must be addressed by global partners, with an interdisciplinary approach. Not only human health, but also animals and environmental components are crucial to thoroughly understand the complexity and impact of AMR.

New technologies and innovations in life sciences and the pharmaceutical industry can help tackling the emergence of antimicrobial resistance by improving early detection, increasing prevention and enhancing appropriate control of transmission.

During these two afternoon online workshop, six working groups will address topics in line with the One Health approach. This interactive format will provide a platform for all participants to share country and institutional specific knowledge activities as well as best practices that will further strengthen international cooperation to fight AMR. These topics concern: the Role of technologies to improve and control AMR measure, Application of translational research towards the development and improvement of measures to tackle AMR, Use of health-related medical technology application (mHealth) in AMR action plans, Food safety, food security and AMR, Capacity strengthening for One Health approaches in Asia and latest developments and challenges in the pharmaceutical industry to address AMR.

“We have learned the full meaning and impact of the word pandemic over the last two years. It has reminded us just how interdependent human health, animal health and the environment are. It has shown us how destabilizing cross border threats can be and demonstrated the incredible damage that a health crisis can inflict on our societies, on our people, on our economies and our way of life. And crucially, it has highlighted the importance of decisive coordinated action and collaboration between countries when faced by global health threats”, said John Ryan, Director for Public Health and Food Safety in the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE).

For that matter, research and innovation play a pivotal role in strengthening the quality of surveillance measures. The working groups will concentrate on identifying the areas of focus at country level towards improving laboratory infrastructure, enhance training of the researchers, reduce resource constraints and support the sustainability of funding for the implementation of a One Health approach in AMR.
