Poultry litter is a mixture of poultry bird faeces, feed, water and bedding material (rice husk, wood saw or coconut coir). The litter condition deteriorates over the period due to microbiological action which results in the root of all expenses (maintenance, hygiene, health & labour) & low quality of output (of bird’s weight & health). Also, leftover litter is neither good manure nor environmentally safe for disposal. One of the cheaper options to maintain litter in good condition is Raking, i.e. breaking of litter cakes to restrict ammonia formation & reduce moisture level, which helps to control bacterial growth and unhygienic conditions. Because of complexity, litter management is one of the critical problem faced by the poultry industry globally.
Few solutions are available in developed countries to perform the raking operation in the presence of livestock. But these are neither suitable nor cost-effective for Indian farms. Hence manual raking is the only option available for Indian farm conditions. But the challenges in manual litter raking methods are
1) Laborious
2) Time consuming
3) Least effective
4) Unhygienic for the labour as well as for birds
Very few people took efforts and make a research to develop a raking machine for Indian poultry farmers, but nobody was successful because of the following critical challenges
1) Safe to operate in livestock (from 10th day to 35th day)
2) Low noise (<30db) and no dust
3) Effective in varied seasons throughout geography and floor conditions,
4) Low operating & maintenance cost.
