PATNA: The foodgrain production in the state has registered sustained growth. The Economic Survey 2019-20, based on the achievements made in the 2018-19, noted that the potential of the primary sector (agriculture) needed to be tapped to give a boost to the rural economy and, thereby, through it to the state’s economy itself.

The Economic Survey report tabled in both the Houses of state legislature on Monday, has noted that foodgrain (rice, wheat, maize and pulses) production in the state stood at 163.12 lakh tonnes in 2018-19.

In tune with the trend, the government took to promoting organic farming of vegetables in 12 districts — Patna, Buxar, Bhojpur, Nalanda, Vaishali, Saran, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur and Munger. A sum of Rs155.88 crore had been earmarked to extend support to the farmers concerned who take to organic farming, said the report.

It has also pointed out that the operational agro-based factories in the state have registered an annual growth rate of 16.4% over the last 10 years, compared to only 3.3% at the national level.

The report noted that Rs742.54 crore was invested in food processing industries during 2017-18 and 2018-19, which is the “highest among all the industries classified as the high priority sector.”
