Role of Veterinarians and the Livestock Sector in “Viksit Bharat @ 2047”

India, poised to become a global superpower by 2047, recognizes the importance of holistic development across all sectors, including agriculture and livestock. With over 70% of rural households dependent on livestock for supplementary income, the livestock sector plays a pivotal role in achieving the vision of a prosperous and developed India (Viksit Bharat). Veterinarians, as guardians of animal health and productivity, are indispensable in this mission.

The Livestock Sector: A Pillar of Rural and National Economy

India is the world’s largest producer of milk and ranks high in egg and meat production. Livestock contributes approximately 4.35% to the national GDP and serves as a critical source of livelihood, nutrition, and economic security for millions. By 2047, the livestock sector has the potential to double its contribution through enhanced productivity, value addition, and export opportunities.

Improved animal husbandry practices, efficient fodder management, and disease control can elevate livestock farming into a highly profitable venture. Additionally, the sector can support India’s climate goals by promoting sustainable practices like organic manure production and methane mitigation strategies.

 Veterinarians as Catalysts for Transformation

Veterinarians are central to the growth and sustainability of the livestock sector. Their role extends beyond curing animal diseases; they are crucial in ensuring animal welfare, improving productivity, and safeguarding public health.

  1. Animal Health Management:

Veterinarians are responsible for diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases in livestock. In a future-focused India, they will need to embrace technological advancements like AI-driven diagnostics and telemedicine to reach remote areas and reduce disease outbreaks.

  1. Food Safety and Public Health:

The “One Health” approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health, will become critical in combating zoonotic diseases by 2047. Veterinarians will play a key role in ensuring food safety standards, monitoring antibiotic use, and preventing the spread of diseases from animals to humans.

  1. Productivity Enhancement:

Veterinarians guide farmers in improving genetic potential through artificial insemination, embryo transfer technology, and proper nutrition. These measures, combined with effective vaccination programs, will lead to healthier, more productive livestock.

  1. Capacity Building and Farmer Empowerment:

Veterinarians act as educators and advisors, empowering farmers with knowledge about modern animal husbandry practices. By 2047, this role will expand to include training on smart farming technologies, climate-resilient practices, and entrepreneurship development.

Innovations Driving the Livestock Sector by 2047

  • Digital Technologies: Precision farming tools, wearable devices for health monitoring, and mobile apps for veterinary services will transform livestock management.
  • Genomic Advancements: Enhanced breeding programs using gene-editing techniques will increase disease resistance and productivity.
  • Climate-Smart Practices: Sustainable livestock management practices, such as biogas production and rotational grazing, will contribute to environmental conservation.

 Policy and Infrastructure Support

Government initiatives like the National Livestock Mission and Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund lay the foundation for the sector’s growth. By 2047, robust infrastructure for cold chains, processing units, and rural veterinary clinics will be essential. Collaboration between public and private stakeholders will further ensure access to affordable veterinary care and market linkages for livestock farmers.

 Conclusion

Veterinarians and the livestock sector are integral to India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047. Their combined efforts will ensure food security, economic growth, and rural empowerment while promoting sustainability. By leveraging technology, innovation, and inclusive policies, veterinarians and livestock farmers can shape a resilient and prosperous “Viksit Bharat.”
