Role of Veterinarians & Livestock sector for “VIKSIT BHARAT@2047”

Dr. K. Swathi, Assistant Professor, Department of Animal Genetics and breeding, College of Veterinary Science, PVNRTGVU, Hyderabad

Abstract: In the journey toward a “Viksit Bharat 2047”, Veterinarians will be integral in supporting sustainable agriculture, ensuring food security, contributing to public health, and fostering environmental and wildlife protection. By integrating science, technology, and ethical practices, Veterinarians will ensure that India’s animal-related industries are not only productive but also sustainable and humane. Their role will be central to a thriving, healthy, and progressive India in the decades to come.

In realizing the vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047” (Developed India 2047), Veterinarians will play a crucial role in various aspects of societal development. As India aspires to become a leading global power by its Centenary of Independence, Veterinarians will be pivotal in ensuring sustainable agriculture, enhanced animal health, food security, environmental protection, and public health.

The Following are some key areas where Veterinarians will contribute:

  1. Improvement of Livestock Health and Productivity

Disease Prevention and Control : Veterinarians will continue to play an essential role in controlling animal diseases (like Foot and Mouth Disease, Lumpy Skin Disease, Blue Tongue, Avian Influenza, etc.), ensuring that livestock remains healthy. This will minimize livestock losses due to Diseases and contribute to higher productivity in sectors like dairy, poultry, and meat production.

Genetic Improvement: Veterinarians will contribute to the breeding of healthier and more productive livestock by Artificial Inseminations and also utilizing Sex Sorted Semen Technologies, enhancing meat, milk, and egg yields. This will support India’s food security and economic growth.

  1.  Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development.

Animal Husbandry Practices: Veterinarians will help farmers adopt more efficient, humane, and sustainable animal husbandry practices, ensuring a better standard of living for rural communities while reducing environmental impact.

Organic Farming Support: With increasing emphasis on organic farming and sustainable agriculture, Veterinarians will be the key in advising on animal waste management, Composting Techniques, Vermi Culture, manure use, and overall ecosystem health.

  1. Food Security and Safety

Food Quality Control: Veterinarians will ensure that meat, dairy, and eggs meet safety and health standards, reducing the risk of foodborne diseases and enhancing consumer trust.

Fostering Safe Consumption: Veterinarians should work in coordination with food safety organizations to monitor and regulate veterinary drug usage and their residues in the food chain.

  1. Public Health and One Health Approach

Zoonotic Disease Control: With the rise of zoonotic diseases (diseases that can spread from animals to humans ex: Rabies), Veterinarians will be integral in preventing, identifying, and controlling outbreaks, thereby protecting public health.

Preventive Healthcare: As a part of the “One Health” approach, Veterinarians will be key players in fostering health interventions that bridge animal health, human health, and the environment.

  1. 5. Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Protection

Wildlife Health and Conservation: As India works toward preserving its rich bio diversity, Veterinarians will be involved in protecting endangered species, managing wildlife diseases, and supporting conservation efforts in national parks and sanctuaries.

Environmental Stewardship: Veterinarians can help mitigate the impact of climate change on animal health and welfare, offering guidance on animal adaptation strategies to changing environmental conditions.

  1. Veterinary Education and Research

Research and Innovation: Veterinarians will engage in cutting-edge research in fields like veterinary medicine, biotechnology, and genetics, contributing to the global advancement of animal health and welfare.

Training and Capacity Building: Veterinarians will play a role in educating farmers, rural communities, and others in veterinary practices, improving animal care standards across the country.

  1. Ethical and Welfare Considerations

Animal Welfare Advocacy: As India strives for ethical treatment of animals, Veterinarians will be central to advocating for improved animal welfare laws and practices, ensuring that animals are treated with dignity and respect.

Regulation of Animal Cruelty: Veterinarians will also be involved in monitoring and advising on the humane treatment of animals, especially in industries like farming, entertainment, and research.

  1. Livelihood Generation and Economic Growth

Veterinary Services Industry: With increased urbanization and animal ownership, the demand for veterinary services will grow. Veterinarians will contribute to the creation of a robust Veterinary healthcare industry that supports rural economies, fosters job creation, and contributes to the National GDP.
