Successful treatment with EVP: A Case of bovine mastitis with thelitis in a primiparous Buffalo Name of the Owner : Sri Tatineni Raghava. Village : Chipuru gudem. District : Krishna district, A.P. Animal : Graded Murrah (first calving) The incidence of clinical
mastitis with thelitis (inflammation of the teat) was observed on 7th Day of calving in a primiparous graded buffalo. The owner observed sudden swelling and hardness of teats and udder. There was significant pain during milking with scanty milk production. The owner was already aware that the EVP traditional medicines are being adopted by Krishna milk union (KMU) under MCPP (Mastitis control propularisation project) of NDDB. Therefore he contacted KMU, Emergency Mobile Veterinary Clinic Services (EMVC) team. After confirming the disease condition, Dr. D Prasad, consultant veterinarian/ MCPP in-charge, KMU, sent Mr. Narsi Reddy, a person trained in EVP, to provide demonstration for the EVP material preparation and teach the standard protocol for the application of the same. Materials used: Externally Aloe vera – 250 g; Turmeric powder- 50 g; Calcium Hydroxide (lime)-10 g. Materials used: Orally Lemon fruits 6 per day (2 fruits tid) for three days External Application procedure: a. Aloe vera, turmeric and lime were blended to form a reddish paste. b. 100 g of this paste was taken in a bowl and c. 150 ml mustard oil was added to make it in to a liquid form. d. The entire Udder portion of the affected animal was cleaned, washed and the milk was stripped out as much as possible. e. Then the above mixture was applied thoroughly on the udder and the teats with the application of palm pressure. f. The application was repeated 3 times a day for 5 days. Oral application: Along with this external application, 2 lemon fruits were fed to the affected animal after cutting it into halves thrice daily for 3 days. Feedback from the owner of the buffalo: • The owner reported that the swelling was reduced significantly by completion of second day of application of the EVP paste. • By fourth day morning, the swelling and pain had completely gone. • The milk production came back to the normal by 5th day. Cost involvement in EVHP (Ethno-veterinary herbal preparation): The Aloe vera, turmeric and lime available at owner’s house were used. The cost of which would be construed as Rs 50.00. The mustard oil requirement was 2.25 liters and was purchased for Rs. 250.00 for the entire 5 days of EVP treatment. The total cost was Rs. 300.00 for the entire episode and Rs. 60/day.
