INTRODUCTION:
Uterine prolapse is also known as “Calf bed”. The incidence of uterine prolapse commonly occurs in a cow either a few weeks before or after parturition, sometimes within the hours after calving. Its occurrence is most common in dairy cattle than in beef cattle. In other animals like Queen Cat, Bitch, and Mare possibility of uterine prolapse is rare. It is one of the emergency conditions where the cow is to be treated as soon as possible, delaying may cause excess bleeding, invasion of bacteria, necrosis and it may lead to shock.
CAUSES FOR UTERINE PROLAPSE:
- Dystocia (Difficulty in parturition)
- Forced extraction of the fetus
- Increased uterine contraction and increased intra-abdominal pressure
- Eating estrogenic plant substances
- Cervix is wide open and uterine atony
- Relaxed pelvic floor muscles
- Nutritional factors – Deficiency of minerals like calcium

TREATMENT:
Different R’s in the treatment and management of uterine prolapse.
STEPS IN REDUCING UTERINE PROLAPSE:
- Remove the attached placenta if it is on the surface of the uterus
- Relieve the urine by gently pressing the urinary bladder or by upholding the uterine mass
- Remove dirt and dung on the uterine mass using disinfectant potassium permanganate
- Reduce the mass by using sugar or saltwater to the surface of the uterus which helps in the reduction of the uterine mass
- Gently push back the uterine mass completely inside the vagina
- Purse string suture is to be made around the lips of vagina using Gerlach’s needle to prevent further prolapse
PROGNOSIS:
Based on the severity and time taken in treating this emergency condition prognosis is poor to guarded.
