Introduction

India is the largest milk producer in the world, yet its dairy sector faces significant challenges related to animal productivity. Despite the country’s dominance in global milk production, the average milk yield per animal remains considerably low compared to international standards. This disparity can be attributed to several factors, including poor genetic potential of the dairy breeds, inadequate nutrition, and limited access to veterinary services. The Indian dairy industry is predominantly characterized by smallholder farms, which contribute to over 70% of the total milk production. These small-scale operations often lack the resources and knowledge required to implement advanced farming practices that could enhance productivity.

To sustain and enhance its global position, India needs to adopt transformative strategies aimed at boosting the productivity of dairy animals. This article reviews the current state of dairy farming in India and outlines comprehensive strategies to achieve significant productivity gains. By addressing the underlying issues and leveraging modern agricultural techniques, India can ensure sustainable growth and remain competitive in the global dairy market.

  1. Artificial Insemination (AI):Expanding AI programs is essential for improving the genetic quality of the dairy herd. AI allows for the use of semen from high-yielding bulls, ensuring that superior genetic traits are passed on to the next generation. To maximize the benefits of AI, it is crucial to ensure wider coverage and better quality of semen. Training farmers in AI techniques and providing them with access to high-quality semen can significantly improve milk yields across the country.
  2. Crossbreeding:Crossbreeding programs that combine the resilience of indigenous breeds with the higher productivity of exotic breeds can lead to the development of dairy animals that are both productive and well-adapted to local conditions. Indigenous breeds are typically more resistant to local diseases and climatic conditions, while exotic breeds tend to have higher milk production capacities. By strategically crossbreeding these animals, it is possible to create a hybrid breed that leverages the strengths of both, leading to improved productivity and sustainability.
  3. Genomic Selection:Utilizing genomic selection techniques involves analyzing the DNA of dairy cattle to identify genetic markers associated with desirable traits such as high milk yield, disease resistance, and reproductive efficiency. By using this information, farmers can make more informed breeding decisions, selecting animals with the best genetic potential for propagation. Genomic selection accelerates the breeding process, allowing for faster genetic improvements compared to traditional methods. It also enables the identification and elimination of undesirable traits, further enhancing the overall quality and productivity of the herd.

Farmers should be supported in growing various types of fodder crops, such as legumes and grasses, which are rich in essential nutrients. Additionally, promoting the use of high-yield and drought-resistant fodder varieties can enhance feed availability. Efficient utilization of agricultural by-products, such as straw and husks, through treatment and enrichment processes can also provide valuable feed resources. Government and private sector initiatives can help provide seeds, training, and support for fodder cultivation.
  3. Supplementary Feeding:Providing mineral and vitamin supplements is crucial for addressing specific nutritional deficiencies that can impair animal health and productivity. Deficiencies in essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and trace elements, as well as vitamins like A, D, and E, can lead to various health issues and reduced milk production. Supplementary feeding practices, including the use of mineral blocks, fortified concentrates, and premixes, can help ensure that dairy animals receive the necessary nutrients. Regular assessment of the nutritional status of herds and tailored supplementation strategies can further optimize health and productivity.
