Treatment & Prevention of Mastitis in Goats:
Mastitis in goat mostly occur after kidding as a post partum Mastitis. This type of mastitis mostly developed few days before kidding and farmers considered it as udder edema and no treatment provided at that time. After kidding only swelling of udder and teat realised,by the time mastitis became chronic in nature.
Organisms responsible for Goat Mastitis:
1.Coagulase-negative staphylococci-most prevalent and can cause persistent infections in goats.
- Streptococcal intramammary infections can occur in both subclinical and clinical cases but are usually much less frequent.
3.Streptococcus agalactiae is not a common mastitis pathogen in does.
4.Mycoplasma infections, primarily M mycoides (large colony type) and M putrefaciens, sometimes cause serious outbreaks of mastitis in goats.
5.M putrefaciens causes septicemia, polyarthritis, pneumonia, and encephalitis, together with serious disease and mortality in suckling kids.
6.M capricolum has also been reported to cause severe mastitis in goats and infection in kids.
7.gram-negative organisms cause intermittent infections that may be severe but are usually self-limiting.
8.Trueperella pyogenes sometimes produces multiple, nodular abscesses.
9.Does can also exhibit signs of mastitis from caprine arthritis and encephalitis. Agalactia is common, as is a hardening of the udder from fibrosis.
Diagnosis:
1.By observing symptoms
2.Milk testing before and after kidding.
Treatment:
Treatment based on Antibiotic sensitivity test.
1.Complete removal of milk from affected quarters is the first treatment
